Basil and Norma Boyd are retiring. BOYD’S FOOTWEAR has been in the family for over eighty years, and three generations. Theirs is the kind of small family business that is the glue of small towns in Ireland and it will be a sad day for the community when the shutters come down. This portrait is of the shop with the people who brought it to life. Basil, Norma, and Orla, it has been a pleasure to be your neighbour.

BACK TO THE BAY TREE!

Teamwork in action and now the paintings are changed out in both the Bay Tree Portlaoise (https://www.facebook.com/thebaytreeportlaoise) and The Bay Tree Restaurant (https://www.facebook.com/baytreegoonhavern) Athy.

The theme is edible plants. The menu is excellent.

Well worth a visit on this very busy festival weekend.

Great weekend at MAKE IT! KILDARE Food & Gift Fair at Newbridge Town Hall

Saturday and Sunday the 12^th and 13^th of November were busy days meeting people, selling my paintings and cards, and painting the beautiful holly.

I was interviewed by Thomas Maher of KFM radio (https://www.kfmradio.com/), who made it fun and easy – appreciated. There was great energy in the place and I enjoyed meeting other vendors and learning a thing or two from them.

Barrow Blueway Blooms 2019-2020

Over the space of a year, I created a series of sixteen botanical watercolours focusing on the flora along the Barrow line of the Grand Canal in Monasterevin town. There are four paintings for each of the seasons to capture the variety of vegetation growing along the waterway. The project was commissioned by Monasterevin Tidy Towns and partly funded by Kildare County council. Each visit I took samples from the canal area and was hosted by both Glanbia Country Life, and Topline Willoughbys Hardware, both of Monasterevin, where I could paint and speak to the public about the project. The finished paintings were framed and exhibited at different venues in Monastervin.

Barrow Blueway Blooms in Summer

This year-long project began in the summer with early morning walks by the canal in Monasterevin. The weather was idyllic – warm, blue sky, bird song, and a pretty little damselfly. I collected wild plants to paint and was made welcome at Willoughbys in Monasterevin, where I painted and talked with the public about the project.

The project was commissioned by Monasterevin Tidy Towns and partly funded by Kildare County council. The video was created by Nuala Madigan, an Environmental education officer with the Irish Peatland Conservation Council.

Barrow Blueway Blooms in Autumn

Autumn brings berries, all delightful to paint. The morning walks by the canal were chilly but I was well wrapped up and the sun came out. I brought my plants to Countrylife Garden Center, Monasterevin, where I was welcomed and given a table to paint at and talk with the public about the project.

Barrow Blueway Blooms in Winter

Winter walking by the canal, not yet bright, with the air crisp and clean so I could see my breath. When the sun came out everything sparkled. I worked at Countrylife Garden Center, Monasterevin, where I was welcomed and given a table indoors and talked with the public about the project.

Plant foraging on a beautiful sunny spring morning by the canal, with plenty of mud and puddles but I was well prepared with wellies and a raincoat. Easy to forget Covid-19 as the plants got on with growing regardless. There could be no visit to any venue in Monasterevin this time. Instead, I brought the plants home and painted them in my studio.

PLEASED TO PRESENT this promotional video, created by two young third-year TV and Media students at SETU, Carlow. It was a very new experience for me and they made it a good one. I found them friendly, respectful, and professional. They interviewed me about my art practice, intercut with footage of Scribbling Gull Studio, which houses both my studio and shop.
